Preventive conservation strategies for protection of organic objects in museums, historic buildings and archives.

Objective

This project aims to provide conservator staff at museums, historic buildings and archives with a new preventive conservation strategy for the protection of cultural property, based on an early warning system assessing the environmental impact on organic objects. Current approaches to preventive conservation of organic objects will be reviewed through consultation with end-users. The early warning system contains of two steps: 1 monitoring the rate of decay by an effect sensor for organic materials. 2. If decay is observed passive optical chemical sensors will be used to determine the concentration of major impact factors. Combined information on the contribution of different components together with the knowledge on chemical deterioration of organic objects will be the second stage with information on the possible causes and sources of the potential damages. Based on this information new preventive conservation strategies will be developed.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)
