Objective
We propose a joint European Environmental year-round Observatory at Summit on top of the Greenland ice sheet. The conditions at Summit with: the highest elevation north of the Arctic Circle, the stable climate, the limited cloud cover and the remoteness from anthropogenic emissions altogether makes Summit an ideal site for detecting global change. Also, the existence of a deep ice core from this site enables the research community to compare future global changes, against a solid history of natural variability of both climate and atmospheric constituents.
The European benefit will be the favorable marginal cost conditions for logistics, through a collaboration with the US National Science Foundation. Altogether over 50 scientists have joined this effort to establish the Summit research activities, which involves the European (FP5) priorities. To encourage the transnational use of this facility, we propose a cost effective solution for logistics at Summit.
