Objective
The objective of this proposal is to create a European Directory of ocean-observing sites/devices (including their geographical location, characteristics, frequency and type of observations, and links to data-holding agencies/institutes) by collecting and assembling scattered information from existing metadatabases and from oceanographic centres in all European coastal countries (including non-EU countries). This Directory (EDIOS) will provide for the first time a management tool which will permit the scientific and logistic design of a long-term marine observing system, combining operational agencies and research projects as sources. The creation of EDIOS will involve all kinds of user groups at all stages. A user-friendly visual interface will ensure that relevant information can easily be extracted by anybody. Classification of the metadata contained in EDIOS will enable the definition of an Initial European Ocean Observing system.
