EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED CONTROL STRATEGY OF POTATO LATE BLIGHT

Objective

Background

Potatoes and field-grown tomatoes are very important crops in Europa. The most important disease, potato late blight is caused by the fungus Phytophthora infestans. The disease occurs worldwide and causes important economic losses in potatoes and tomatoes due to lower yields and quality. The control of late blight is dependant on frequent applications of synthetic fungicides. In EU member states every year approximately 13.000 tons of active ingredient is used to control potato late blight, at a total cost of about 140 million ECU. Since 1980 the population of P. infestans has gradually changed to a more aggressive population with A1 and A2 mating types and sexual reproduction.

In many European countries research is being carried out on Integrated Control Strategies for potato blight in potatoes and tomatoes.

The objective of this action is to establish a network for communication between scientists and research groups in ten European countries who are working on the development of Integrates Control Strategies for control of potato late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and avoid duplication of efforts by coordination research between Member States. This network will result in a complete datapackage with information on Integrated Control of Late Blight. This information can than be used to develop a decision support system.

Short description of the project

Workshops will be organized once a year. The workshops will be open to all participants and all people on the mailing list, including the makers of fungicides.

In the first workshop a survey will be presented of all operational forecasting systems and integrated Control Strategies in Europe. The development of a European Integrated Control Strategy, in which all available knowledge is included, will be initiated. Priorities for research will be discussed. Results will be discussed in a 2nd workshop of research and development.

In the second year validation experiments with the Integrated Control Strategies will be carried out and presented in a third workshop. An implementation on farm level will take place in the third year and the results will be presented in a last workshop.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
