Summary Methods for integrating a burnout catalyst in a boiler to optimize short heat up time and to protect the catalyst for over-heating if defined. A method for improving mass transfer to the catalyst surface while maintaining a low-pressure drop has been demonstrated. Method to optimize surface area and cell density for monolithic catalyst to have a good conversion and to avoid clogging by flash ash has been devised. Description of results A reduction of emission of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide better than 80% for a whole combustion cycle in a log fired boiler has been demonstrated. This good result has been achieved in a combustor with already good low emission capacity. Low deactivating effects has been observed for a catalyst in long-term experiments in a lab. The catalyst has proved to ignite soon after ignition of the fuel, thus reducing most of the emissions also from the critical first stage of the combustion cycle. Applicability of results The methods are demonstrated in laboratory but adaptation to a commercial design and long term testing under normal operating conditions needs to be done before commercialization Exploitation potential Residential combustion of biofuels with low emissions will increase the potential for utilization of those fuels also to areas with restrictions on the emissions. Manufacturers of residential appliances are the major users of the result, in particular boiler manufacturer. By using a catalyst in a boiler/heater the design may be significantly simplified and the cost reduced with out the emission properties. Ability of partner to carry out commercialization Investment needed for finishing the development work and having a commercial product is estimated to approximately 500 000Euro. The cost for the manufacturing company is not included. TPS will apply for financial support from public R&D funding. The major risk is a stop in the increasingly more straightforward stringent emission restriction for the residential appliances. There are boilers that without catalyst perform as good or better than the present emission standards (but even those applying a catalyst further reduces the emissions).
