New cleaner production methods to reduce environmental impacts of the European fish transforming industry.

Objectif

This Project aims to apply new environmental management concepts in the fish transforming industry in such a way that it would be proved that it is possible to reduce the environmental impact of this industry. To achieve this general objective. the Project will focus its efforts on two different subjects:

1. To reduce waste emissions by developing environmentally friendly production work routines. Mostly those defined as 'clean technologies'.
2. To develop and test the suitability of an EMS (environmental management system) especially designed for the European fish processing industry, aiming to prove that environmental matters should be considered as important as other production-related factors in companies business management strategies.
Dissemination of the results will be carried out during the Demonstration Phase of the Project (three last months). Results obtained will be available to the EU Fish Transforming Industry through:

- Fish processing industries will be informed and supplied of all necessary data.
- Production companies involved in the Project will open their plants to industrial visitor's during the last two months of the Project for personal exhibitions.
- Results will be presented in national and international meetings.
- Final results will be published in international journals.

All Fish Transforming Industry National Associations throughout European Union will be informed about the possibility of getting data on the Project and visiting involved plants eight weeks before starting the Demonstration Phase in the Project. General information on the Project's results will be made available through Fisheries Ministry in each EU country.
The objectives of the Project are well adapted to the AREA 3 (Generic Science and Advanced Technologies for Nutritious Foods), SUB-AREA 3.3 (Advanced and Optimised Technologies and Processes). Topic 3.3.4 (Development of environmentally friendly procedures and processes). Since clean technologies have rarely been applied in companies belonging to the fish industry, an objective such as implementing these procedures in a global way in the fish transforming industry requires a period of demonstration. Likewise, the Environmental Management System use in this economic sector needs a phase of implementation to transfer this managing method to the industry. Nevertheless. the viability of these two objectives in applying them to the fish transforming industry can be guaranteed since they have been implemented in other industrial sectors leading to good results. Included in the new EMAS Directive are, in addition to the establishment of an EMS, the requirements of periodic eco-audits and the implementation of BATNEEC-techniques. So far no databanks for cleaner technologies of the fish processing industry have been collected and the need of performing cleaner technology surveys or waste minimisation assessments of this industrial branch is urgent and without doubt justified.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
