Objective
The overall goal of the investigation is to study the phenomena of very low electric fields obtained by introducing different electrodes in the stored manure in order to design a technology for deedoration and hygienic control of the manure before d;sposal to the environment.
The intermediate objectives are:
A)to study the elzctrochemical phenomenon;
B) to design a technology for reduction of ammonia and other noxious gas emission, deodorization and hygienic control of manure before disposal;
C) to analyze the key factors for process effectiveness in d;fferent kind of plant;
D)to set-up new bioindicators parameters to monitoring the e]ectrochemical treatment applied on manure, with particular reference to pathogens;
E) to elucidate the role of electric effect, metal ions, toxic compounds etc. on metabolic activities of microflora related to odours release;
F) to assess the technica and economic feasibility of the process.
The project will be developed by partners in 2 geographical areas, characterized by different climatic conditions (Mediterranean area and Continental area). For the electro project implementation the following steps are envisaged:
1) Manure characterization: the most important chemical and microbiological characters will be considered to compare manure of different origin and to monitor the electrochemical process.
2)Mechanisms of action: in-depth research on the electrochemical process effect on microrganisms metabolism will be carried on. Surviving of pathogens interaction of metal-ions with the microbial indicators, formation of toxic compounds, induced trophism (the bacterial cell are electrically charged), etc. will be considered.
3) Biomonitoring: the new parameters will be compared with those obtained by traditional biological indicators as microbial counts and chemical parameters.
4) Monitoring of working parameters, emission and hygienic quality of the air in laboratory, pilot and medium scale plants in order to optimize the process and to prove its effectiveness.
6) Technical and economical feasibility: during the experimentation the energetic needs will be carefully evaluated and the possibility of using alternative, renewable electricity sources will be compared with traditional treatment (e.g. aeration, long term storage).
