Composting of husks produced by two phase centrifugation olive oil milling plants

Objectif

The two phases centrifugationtechnology, recently introduced in the European olive milling plants, seems to solve the problem of olive milling waste water by reducing dramatically their production, but in the meantime shifts the problem to husks, which have more water content and higher phenols concentration. The present project is aimed at selecting suitable microbial strains and testing two different composting technologies (composting pile and composting reactor, horizontal and vertical) to solve in an energetically and economically acceptable way the problem of husks disposal from the new olive milling technology, producing compost fertilizer. The expected results of the project will be a simple composting technology, supported by selected microbial strains, able to solve the problems induced by husks produced in two phases olive oil production
a) husks environmental impact;
b) costs for discharge of wet husks. Furthermore, the compost fertilizer production will be a contribution for the fertilizer European demand. The characteristics of the proposed technology will be:
a) reduced environmental impact (emissions);
b) energetic and economic suitability for SMEs. For the Husks project implementation the following steps are envisaged:
1) Husks characterization and analysis methodologies determination;
2) Preparation of starter cultures for composting: it will be done by selecting aerobic bacteria and mycetes able to degrade toxic compounds present in the husks. The selected cultures will be obtained by means of conventional techniques of enrichment cultures in laboratory. Materials particularly rich in microflora will also be tested as inoculum;
3) Addition of different wastes and biomass (wastewater from sugar-refineries, yeast production plants, wineries, breweries, sludge from sewage disposal plant, manure, and fibrous wastes). to husks to produce compost correctly balanced as Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus;
4) Setup newbioindicators reliable and capable to give a rapid result to monitor the process and to check the compost maturity;
5) Setup molecular biology techniques to check the hygienic property of the compost in relation to the presence of the most significant pathogenic microorganisms;
6) Test the agronomic suitability of the produced compost. Agronomic trials will be performed at the experimental plots of Experimental Institute of Plant Nutrition of Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, in Gorizia.
7) Design and test of two composting processes at different technological level (a. composting pile and b. composting reactors) in different testing plants(0,1-0,3 cubic m/day). The reactor will be an horizontal plant and a two steps vertical plant. The composting pile will be built u ~in all the involved Countries to test the different husks in the differen climatic conditions; 9) Asses the costs and the techno economic feasibility of the process.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
