Preparation of a proposal for stock assessment of some elasmobranch fishes in european waters.

Objective

The main objective of this concerted action is to organise two meetings of three days each in order to formulate a new research proposal, which describes the steps required to obtain and compile the data with which to carry out stock assessments of a limited number of elasmobranch species in European waters.

A recent initiative taken by the ICES Study Group Elasmobranch Fishes, to attempt stock assessments, has been hindered by lack of appropriate data. Not because there are no data, but because data collection and analysis is not well co-ordinated on a European basis. Basic biological data and data on changes in abundance of elasmobranchs, although collected by many institutes, are not readily available, often being pooled with data on several species or left unanalysed. The data are often sparse, even for those species, which are regularly landed.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
