Intestinal flora : beneficial and detrimental effects on host nutritional balance and health

Objectif

Objectives and deliverables: The overall objective of the proposed project is the Co-ordination of European research and determination of research orientation especially regarding areas of gut microbial ecology in which there is lack of knowledge but which nevertheless are of crucial importance for human health and well-being. This wi be accomplished by bringing together a unique combination of experts from unive groups, research institutes, and industries from all over Europe interested in the common theme of gut microbial ecosystem. This will increase co-operation, communication and research in this multidisciplinary field. In addition to co-ordinating existing efforts, the programme will seek to define topics where further research and development is essential ta ensure the development of benefits to end-users. This action will strengthen the links between already existing FAIR contract participants that share overlapping domains of interest. Most importantly, in addition to academia and public research sectors. The Action will include industrial partners who are knowledgeable as to what industrial applications could come about from fundamental research. The latter partners will facilitate the dissemination of the results to other potential industrial end-users.

The final deliverable will be to arrive to a consensus as to the current state of the art concerning gut microbial ecology and intestinal flora and what progress needs to be made in each domain to fulfil the scientific goals fixed.

Relevance: The concerted action proposed here will comply with the Agriculture and Fisheries workprogramme included in Area 3 (Generic Science and Advances Technologies for Nutritious Foods), Sub-area 3.1.4 (Physico-chemical Aspects of Food Absorption and Metabolism).

Organisation: The work of the the Concerted Action will be managed by a Steering Committee consisting of an experienced Co-ordinator, sub-coordinators of defined sub-groups, each in charge of a specific scientific sub-area, and an industrial partner who will ensure the dissemination of the results to industrial end-users. The scientific sub-areas to be discussed are:
1. Bacteria/dietary interactions, with an emphasis on bacterial metabolites;
2. Bacteria/host interactions, with an emphasis on colonisation mechanisms and immune response;
3. Bacteria/bacteria interactions, with an emphasis on colonisation resistance mechanisms. As these sub-areas share overlapping themes, participants from one scientific group can decide to take part in several subgroups. The partners are brought together to twice-a-year meetings and the reflections will be written down in the form of periodic progress reports, annual reports and a final comprehensive report. Dissemination will be attempted through non conventional, user-friendly form, taking advantage of the expertise accumulated by the FAIR 3014 group (Disseminating the results of EU research programmes to European food smes via 1 7-country dynamic network system). Partnership: Scientists from eight European countries representing a variety of geographical areas and research settings: academia, research centres, and industry.

Benefits will accrue to: -European food industry, other industries

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
