Objective
SALT IS ONE OF THE GEOLOGICAL DISPOSAL OPTIONS OF THE CEC COORDINATED PROJECT "PAGIS" FOR THE SAFETY ASSESSMENT OF HLW DISPOSAL SYSTEMS. DATABASE, PARAMETERS AND MODELS WERE SELECTED AND THE METHODOLOGY DEVELOPED IN PHASE 1. THE PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT WAS CARRIED OUT IN PHASE 2. BEST ESTIMATE AND UNCERTAINTY CALCULATIONS ARE PERFORMED FOR THE COMBINED SYSTEM OF REPOSITORY, AND BIOSPHERE. DOSES TO MAN RESULTING FROM THE RELEASE OF RADIOACTIVITY FROM THE REPOSITORY ARE OBTAINED. THE PARAMETER SENSITIVITY IS STUDIED. AMONG OTHER IT SHOWS HOW FAR APPROPRIATE CHOICES OF THE REPOSITORY DESIGN PARAMETERS CAN IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE WHOLE SYSTEM. THIS IS DONE FOR A SELECTED REFERENCE SITE (THE GORLEBEN SALT DOME) AND THE VARIOUS RELEASE SCENARIOS. ALSO VARIANT SITES ARE CONSIDERED IN THE NETHERLANDS AND DENMARK AS WELL AS A BEDDED SALT FORMATION IN FRANCE.
