QUALITY CONTROL METHODS FOR LOW- AND MEDIUM ACTIVE WASTE

Objetivo

The homogeneity of several radionuclides measured by different analytical procedures, on 2 real cement embedded wastes, were compared by the evaluation of homogeneity using statistical criteria as a function of 2 main dimensions, the radial and the longitudinal. Contradictory conclusions were established. In the same study, analytical procedures were proposed concerning strontium-90, plutonium-241, carbon-14 and hydrogen-3 determinations. Additionally, the interactions between gamma-rays and organic embedding matrices such as bitumen were studied. The phenomena involved were: the evolution of radiolytic gases, the swelling and the identification of the trapped gases, and the transfer ability.
The development of a nondestructive measurement technique for the assessment of the level of alpha-emitters in waste has been carried out with the MACRO system using gamma spectrometry on americium-241 and replacing the passive neutron counting technique previously used. Lastly, a nondestructive measurement technique using 2 devices was developed for the assessment of free water in cemented radwaste packages.
