Accident management and protection of the population in case of an accidental radioactive release into the atmosphere is still a major research and development topic in the domain of nuclear fission safety. A methodology to assess in quasi real-time the source term is under development. The knowledge of the source term helps to assess the actual and future major contamination fields, thus optimizing the intervention. Hence, monitoring procedures and guidelines are being worked out. For example, the real-time assessment of the magnitude of the release can be done using sufficiently dense rings of shielded detectors measuring simultaneous short-time average gamma dose rates. Gamma spectrometry is necessary to assess the main nuclides within the different physicochemical groups (noble gases, halogens, caesium-group, etc). In-situ gamma spectrometry offers an interesting potential in this framework. Further development of practical equipment tailored towards these specific needs is still required. The benefits of this methodology include an optimization of the intervention strategy. The main market would be in the area of adapted accident monitoring around nuclear power plants and major nuclear installations.
