Properties of nuclear fuel particles and release of radionuclides from carrier matrix

Objectif

The objective of this present project is to improve the description of the chemistry involved in the formation, emission, transformation, deposition and mobilization of some significant fission products (FP). It should end up in the elaboration of a global model able to describe the complex processes taking place in different scenarios of reactor accident, and in particular, it should describe :
(i) The properties of the particles that are generated in a mechanical fragmentation mechanism, by means of laboratory studies of the physico-chemical characteristics of aerosols and fuel particles emitted by overheated U02 fuel matrix. This matrix is doped with various FP and more precisely with caesium, strontium, ruthenium and molybdenum.
(ii) The processes and kinetics of the progressive solubilisation of thes narticles in semi-natural ecosystems (organic soils, clayey soil, water system, influence of bioerosion from microorganisms) and the behaviour of fuel particles ingested by domestic animals.
(iii) Codes to predict the properties of FP and to estimate the travel distance of particles originating from the reactor fuel :
- the modelisation of the dissolution of fuel particles and their fixation/mobilization ,
- and finaly the modelisation of the first steps of their transfer into the food chain, thanks to laboratory experiments (see (i) and (ii)) and on the basis of meteorological, chemical and thermodynamical data.
