Objective
THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES KEY RESEARCH ISSUES IN THE AREA OF PREVENTION OF SEVERE ACCIDENT AND ENHANCEMENT OF DESIGN MARGINS IN THE CONTAINMENT OF ADVANCED PASSIVE-TYPE BOILING WATER REACTOR DESIGNS.
THREE WORK PACKAGES HAVE BEEN DEFINED WHICH ADDRESS:
- LARGE VOLUME STRATIFICATION AND MIXING
- PASSIVE DECAY HEAT REMOVAL
- PASSIVE AEROSOL REMOVAL
EACH WORK PACKAGE CONSISTS OF EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL WORK. EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED IN FOUR EXISTING EUROPEAN EXPERIMENTAL FACILITIES: LINX-2, PANDA, AIDA, PECA. THE ANALYTICAL WORK CONSIST OF THE ASSESSMENT OF STATE-OF-THE-ART COMPUTER PROGRAMS VERSUS PHENOMENA WHICH ARE LESS IMPORTANT FOR THE CURRENT GENERATION OF LWRS, BUT WHICH PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE EVALUATION OF THE SAFETY OF NEW ADVANCED LWRS. IN ADDITION, NEW PHYSICAL MODELS WILL BE DEVELOPED TO IMPROVE EXISTING 3D-CFD CODES AND TO DEVELOP A NEW 3D-CFD COMPUTER PROGRAM.
PARTICIPANTS IN THIS PROJECT INCLUDE RESEARCH INSTITUTES (ECN, CIEMAT, AND PSI), UNIVERSITIES (VALENCIA AND CATALONYA), AND INDUSTRY (NUCON AND KEMA).
