Objective
The beneficiaries of the research into severe accident source terms are those who are responsible for planning severe accident management and emergency preparedness and the Level 2 practitioners who are, or will be, performing Level 2 analyses for operating plants in the context of periodic safety reviews and for future plants. For these analysts, it is essential to know which are the key uncertainties that effect the potential release of radio-activity to the environment (source terms) for the fault sequences that dominate the risk. Identifying these uncertainties is also essential to:
i) ensure that future research is focused on the important issues with respect to commercial plants,
ii) ensure that the key uncertainties are addressed in the PHEBUS programme and
iii) ensure that the key issues are addressed appropriately in the further development of European codes.
In the past, the focus of much of the research and analysis of severe accident behaviour has been on individual phenomena. In order to address the key uncertainties with respect to the source term, it is essential to perform an integrated analysis which includes the essential coupling between a) the release from the primary circuit and behaviour in the containment and b) between thermal hydraulic and fission product behaviour.
This proposal addresses the identification of the key uncertainties, in a 15 month work programme by initially making the maximum use of the results of experiments and analyses that have been carried out in Europe and elsewhere. Subsequently, this work will be extended with a well defined programme of analyses which involves some of the analysts and computer codes that are currently involved in, or have recently been involved in, evaluating the source terms as part of the Level 2 analyses for operating and future plants. The objectives of this proposal are the following:
1. Identify the risk dominant fault sequences for the reactor designs of intere 2. Identify the current state of knowledge of the key phenomena for these sequences.
3. Identify the key uncertainties by performing analyses for the key sequences using modern integrated severe accident codes.
4. Identify the extent to which the identified uncertainties would be addressed in the PHEBUS tests.
5. Evaluate the implications on severe accident source terms. Most of the participants have collaborated in achieving consensus in the methodology for design basis and severe accidents on behalf of DGXI since 1987.
