Round robin test for non destructive assays of 220 litres radioactive waste packages

Objective

The main objective of the intercomparison tests for fissile and non fissile
220 litres packages is to obtain comparable data withdifferent non-destructive assay techniques, in order to improve the quality checking of radioactive waste packages in the national quality checking laboratories of the member states of the European Community.
The intercomparison will be performed on 220 litres packages only. These packages will be submitted to a wide range of different nondestructive examinations e.g. gamma spectroscopy and scanning, ECT and TCT tomography, radiography, doserate, active and passive neutron measurements etc.. Subsequent objectives can therefore be defined as follows:
- comparison of non-destructive assay techniques and procedures under realistic in-field conditions
- comparison of calibration/validation techniques and procedures - determination of method specific uncertainties and systematic errors by comparison of the results obtained by different NDA ; techniques on the same 22 litres package
- definition of NDA based criteria for subsequent representative destructive sampling and analysis
- classification of the different techniques and procedures for characterizatio of waste packages. These classifications complemented with recommendations can reported in a EC guideline or standard
- definition of potential need for further development and improvement. The intercomparison of non-destructive waste assay systems for fissile and non-fissile materials can be subdivided into 5 main subjects: - subject 1: selection of 220 litres packages (this waste form, geometry, can b measured by all participants). The final selection will be agreed by the projec leaders of the participants
- subject 2: equipment and procedures. All national tuned systems will be modif to measure the selected packages of all partipants
- subject 3: Round Robin Tests. The selected packages will be measured at the participating institutes with their own system(s) and according their own procedures on a routine base
- subject 4: analyzing test results. The results will be reported according to predefined characterization list and statistically evaluated - subject 5: EC guideline "Non Destructive Assay Techniques for fissile and non-fissile materia containing waste packages". The different techniques and procedures for charact zation of waste packages will be classified to improve harmonization.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
