Extraction and selective separation of long life nuclides by functionalized macrocycles

Objective

The objectives of the project are the use of macrocyclic compounds to selectively remove nuclides:
- Removal of strontium, cesium and actinides for the decategorization of waste. - In the previous contract, calixarenes able to effectively extract both lanthanides and actinides were synthesized, these calixarenes slightly modified (nature of donor or other macrocyclic compounds (coronands, cavitands...) must enable trivalent actinides to be separated from lanthanides. Several classes of compounds will be synthesized to reach these objectives: - Crown ethers with allosteric cooperativity for strontium removal. - Calix[n]arenes with acetamido phosphine oxide, phosphine oxide - groups for actinide removal.
Different strategies will be investigated to achieve an effective separation of trivalent actinides from lanthanides:
- Calixarenes with a mixture of soft and hard donor groups.
- Functionalized cavitands with a very rigid structure.
- Tailored coronands with nitrogen donors or phosphine oxide groups, open cryptands....
The properties of these extractants will be extensively studied (complexation constants, distribution coefficients of nuclides, transport experiments through supported liquid membranes...) These results will be exploited by teams involved in the field of molecular modeling to understand the selective complexation of cations and to guide the teams synthesizing macrocycles. The most effective compounds will tested in hot cells on real wastes.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
