Objective
The project aims to develop and demonstrate improved methodology for investigating how deep groundwater systems at potential repository sites have been affected by climate and hydrogeological conditions during the quaternary. The approach to achieving this will be by using advanced analytical techniques to sample fractureinfill minerals which are the best geochemical record of past groundwater conditions to complement groundwater and solute ages. These techniques should give data which can be related more directly to cogenetic groundwaters than has been the case in previous studies. Work will be focused on investigating the geochemical link between calcite mineralogy and groundwater salinity, which is suggested by preliminary data. The ultimate goal is to use dated calcite (or other) mineralisation as an indication of hydrochemical changes in the recent past, particularly movements of salinity transitions. Salinity transitions can be simulated by numerical groundwater flow models, and evidence of their historical fluctuations or stability is the most powerful check on validity of a time-dependent model which will be used for predictive safety calculations.
The various European partners will carry out mineralogical, geochemical and isotopic studies on samples from representative sites in different European regions.
Initially 5 sites (Finland, France, Spain, Sweden, UK) are envisaged, representing different present and past hydrogeological conditions. Extensive cross-fertilisatio of methodology and technical collaboration will be built into the project, so that data sets, conceptual models and numerical simulations will be comparable.
The expected outcome from the project will be the dissemination of an agreed conceptual and technical approach to investigating palaeohydrogeology. A state-of-the-art technical approach to obtaining mineral/geochemical evidence will have been developed and evaluated.
