Framework for assessment of environmental impact

Objective

FASSET will bring to radiation protection a framework for assessment of environmental impact, i.e. impacts on organisms and the ecosystem processes. These issues are presently not being addressed in radiation protection. Vice versa, environmental management systems rarely address radiation protection issues. The framework will link sources, exposure, dosimetry and environmental effects/consequences together, by providing a reference set of models, dosimetric factors, etc, for generic organisms and ecosystems. Relevant components of the framework will be identified on an ecosystem basis through expert judgement. The framework would help in assessing environmental impact, in judging compliance against environmental quality criteria and standards, and help in communicating to different stake-holders the likely environmental consequences of projects in a planning stage.
