Evaluation and network of ec-decision support systems in the field of hydrological dispersion models and of aquatic radioecological research

Objective

Several computerised Decision Support Systems (DSS) have been developed for the management of contaminated fresh water environments.

The objectives of the proposed network are:
a) to review and assess the DSSs to ensure that they comply with expectations and needs of potential users;
b) to identify and classify the approaches of the different DSSs;
c) to define their application domains;
d) to synthesise the experience gained for improving the DSSs and for the rational utilisation of the existing products.

The DSSs will be assessed by inter-comparison and testing in view of the needs of the user community. User groups and experts from environmental protection agencies and administrations and from the international scientific community will be involved in DSS exercises. Recommendations for the improvement and the rationale of the DSSs and of their components (models, methodologies, software products) will be supplied to provide the end-users with easy to use and reliable tools for the environmental management.

During the IV EC framework programme, several projects focused on developing computerised Decision Support Systems (DSS) for the management of contaminated fresh water environments.

These DSSs have been, in most cases, implemented in computer codes based on:
a) Models to predict radionuclide behaviour in the aquatic environment;
b) Methodologies for the assessments of the economic, social and ecological impacts of both contamination and remedial measures.

The objectives of the proposed network are:
a) to review and assess the DSSs to ensure that they comply with expectations and needs of potential users;
b) to identify and classify the approaches of the different DSSs;
c) to define their application domains;
d) to synthesise the experience gained for improving the DSSs and for the rational usage of the existing products for applications throughout Europe.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
