The Archive for Source Term Information and System Models II (ASTERISM II) project commenced on 1 February 2000 and ended on 31 July 2001. The main aim of this 18-month Thematic Network project was to extend a prototype database, developed within the European Commission�s (EC�s) 4th Framework Programme, to encompass all the data arising from the 4th Framework �Source Term cluster� projects of the Nuclear Fission Safety programme.
The ASTERISM database was developed in Microsoft Access 97 and runs under Windows 95/98/NT4. The ASTERISM software is able to store data and information concerning scientific or other project results. Its user-interface allows one to edit data, insert images, pictures, graphics and documents, and to display, access and sort the data through pre-programmed queries. Issues associated with the further development of the archive to allow for inclusion of all nuclear fission safety areas (e.g. core degradation and containment) were also addressed, as were issues associated with the inclusion of/association with more substantial research projects, (e.g. Phebus-FP).
The final version of the Source Term archive (ASTERISM v2.0) was issued on CD/ROM to the ASTERISM II partners and the Commission of the European Communities at the end of July 2001.The CD/ROM also contains the handbook for ASTERISM v2.0 and the �Catalogue of Information from CEC DGXII Source Term Cluster Projects (v3.0)�. The Source Term archive includes most of the data, models and software produced by the eleven projects of the 4th Framework Source Term cluster. It also contains end-user summaries for each of the Source Term cluster projects. These summaries present the most important findings of a project from the viewpoint of the typical end-user (e.g. Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) practitioner or researcher) and allow the user to rapidly access more detailed information on aspects of particular interest.
The empty ASTERISM v2.0 (SHELL) database (with handbook) is also available. This is a project data storage system with a user-friendly front-end.
Methodologies have been developed for extending the database system developed under ASTERISM II to include other 4th Framework Nuclear Fission projects, major international experiments, and ongoing 5th Framework projects and future experiments:
ASTERISM v2.0, containing the data, models and software from the 4th Framework Source Term cluster projects, is being made available to all partner organisations in the Source Term cluster (~25 organisations). This will help avoid duplication of research effort, and enable future research, and design and assessment activities, to take full account of the state-of-the-art in this important field of nuclear safety research.
