Assessment of aged piping dissimilar metal weld integrity

Objective

ADIMEW will pride a unique large-scale verification of the performance of a defect-bearing dissimilar welds as found on primary circuit piping in many PWR plants. A test will be carried out on a specially prepared assembly of nuclear specification loaded at 300oC using a four point bending facility. The results will be used to improve procedures for assessment of stability and safety of aged welds of this type, an area not adequately covered by existing codes. Several critical aspects will be examined including the location of susceptible cracking sites, the role of residual stresses, material testing methods and analysis procedures. After evaluation of the results, recommendations will be formulated for improved codes and standards for use at European level. To accelerate their acceptance there will be a direct link with the EC Network for Evaluating Structural Components (NESC) for benchmarking and dissemination.
