Two-phase flow water hammer transients and induced loads on materials and structures of nuclear power plants

Objetivo

In NPPs water hammers occur due to an inflow of sub-cooled water into parts of the equipment filled with steam. Relevant scenarios are: Actions such as start-up o f systems, switch-over from one component to another, activation of safety or auxiliary systems, transients with activation of emergency core cooling or feed water systems. The proposal aims at improved and innovative tools and methods for maintaining and improving the safety by achieving an accurate prediction of the loads on equipment and support structures of NPP. This includes evaluation of existing results on steam condensation in contact with sub-cooled water, new experiments with an innovative two-phase flow instrumentation, scaling studies, improved condensation models and validation of thermal hydraulic codes, new experiments on dynamic stresses in component walls with a complex geometry, and the qualification of fluid-structure interaction models to predict the loads.
