Objective In the case of common cause failure of control rods, nuclear fission process in existing BWRs can't be stopped fast enough. This could cause a core melt accident. To avoid this, a fast acting boron injection system is proposed which stops the nuclear fission process during less than 30 seconds. This new system is passive like the scram system. The investigation of this system by different computer codes and by experimental test rigs shall confirm that this system can be cost-effectively added either to existing or to future BWRs and that a shutdown duration of less than 30 seconds can be realized.
