Understanding the development of military technology

Objectif

Advances in military technology can be critical for the distribution of power in the international system, the state of affairs among nations (conflict or peace), and the outcome of conflict. I intend to study how the pace of military technological innovation, the type of weapons developed (offensive/defensive, task specific/ versatile), and the incentive to engage in arms control agreements are influenced by: a) changes in the distribution of international power, such as the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the possible emergence of Europe as a major international military player; b) characteristics of the R & D process such as the possibility of leapfrogging, imitation (spying), the degree of uncertainty; and c) economic conditions. The methodological framework for addressing these issues will be suitably adapted from the theory of Industrial Organization which has extensively studied very similar issues in the context of corporations rather than nations.
