Efficient ultra short duration x-ray sources based on femtosecond laser interaction with solid targets

Objective

Many biological. physical and chemical phenomena take place on time scales of tens of picoseconds or less and begin to be studied with the help of X-ray radiation. We propose the use of femtosecond laser-produced plasma sources to explore the sub-10ps probing time scale with suprakilovolt X-rays. Our research project aims to solve two important issues in the use of laser-produced plasma X-ray sources for such studies: i) optimise the laser absorption mechanisms to increase substantially the conversion efficiency of laser energy to X-ray energy in the desired range, and ii) increase the bandwidth of the emitted radiation to several tens of eV to allow near-edge band structure measurements. Experimental work will be completed by numerical simulations using hydrodynamic/electromagnetic and particle-in-cell codes.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
