Objective
The purpose of the research is the measurement of the gluon density inside the proton. Its knowledge in the new region available at the HERA energy is fundamental for the description of the proton. This is important by itself to understand the interactions inside the proton and also in view of the physics at the next proton-proton collider at CERN, the LHC, where the dominant processes will be described by interacting gluons. The method to carry out the measurement relies on the direct dependence of the heavy quark production on the gluon content of the proton, in the mechanism of photon-gluon fusion, dominant at HERA. In particular the studies of the J/Psi and Open Charm production will allow a statistically very significant determination of the gluon density in the relevant region of invariant fraction of the proton momentum between 5 X 10**-4 and 5 X 10**-1

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
