Objective
This project is concerned with accurate crystallographic measurments on heavy-fermion superconductors as a function of pressure and temperature. High accuracy structural studies are needed to complete measurements of superconducting, transport and optical properties - all observed under pressure - to allow a comparison with theory.
Precise compressibility measurements will first be made on single crystals and powders, detailed crystallography will follow. The materials of interest are UPd2A13 and UNi2A13 of the U-based and CeCu2Si2 and CeCu2Ge2 of the Ce based heavy-fermion superconductors.
These high-resulution, high-sensitivity structural measurements will be made using the unique high brilliance X-ray beams available at the ESRF in Grenoble. There, wavelength-tunable, focussed monocromatic beams are used with area detectors to collect high quality two-dimensional images. From these reliable intensity data accurate crystallographic information can be obtained. In addition, existing collaboration between the ESRF and experts in the fields of high pressure cells and cryostats will ensure the availability of the state-of-the-art environment facilities required for this project.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
