Ultrafiltration of organic liquids added a pressurized gas, higly improving the hydrodynamic characteristics of the mixture

Objective

The aim of this work is to achieve the filtration of organic solutions (hydrocarbons, silicons,...) with an ultrafiltration membrane by addition of a pressurised gas (supercritical or gaseous CO2) in a way to modify the mixture rheology and to obtain significant permeate fluxes, at low temperatures.
The study is divided in two parts: At first, in a Portuguese laboratory, determination of: - the real CO2 solubility in organic liquids as a function of operative conditions. - the apparent viscosity of the mixture C02 + organic phase
Then, an experimental set-up will be built at the Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (C.E.A) to take advantage of the previous results with TiO2 ultrafiltration membranes. These handlings will allow us to determine the optimal quantities of CO2 to dissolve in the organic phases so that transmembrane transfer could be faster and more important than during the pure organic phases filtration.
