Poverty and income inequality in Greece and their national and EU policy implications

Objective

The main objective of the proposal is the analysis of poverty and economic inequality in Greece using a more comprehensive and appropriate data base than those of the relevant studies in the past. In addition it aims to investigate particular aspects of the problem which have not been examined so far and to provide estimations suitable for comparative purposes. Finally it aims to evaluate relevant National tax and social policy measures as well as to provide information for more effective EU policy intervention.
In order to achieve the objectives of this study the primary data and information from a sample survey especial designed to analyse income inequalities and poverty, which was conducted by the Greek National Center of Social Research, will be utilised to analyse the structure and the distribution of urban and rural income and modelling the impact of government policies.
