Study of galactic interaction and merging using n-body simulation techniques

Objective

I plan to study the interaction and merging of galaxies via N-body simulations. The use of high performance computer facilities will allow me to investigate merging in compact groups of galaxies using direct summation N-body codes. Thus the simulation will be self-consistent and will not be affected by the geometry of the system.
I will use the final steps of the evolution of these simulations to stu the structure of merger remnants. I plan to look at the shapes of the remnants, the distribution of matter and their kinematics. I would like to make detailed comparisons of my results with observational data, and to check whether elliptical galaxies can be merger remnants of compact groups.
I plan also to study the orbital structure of the remnant of a merger between two individual galaxies. We will make statistical study of the orbits of stars and see how these depend on the parameters of the encounter orbit and on the type of the two merging galaxies.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
