Objective
The proposed research project is dedicated to the determination of the Galactic 26 Al origin on base of its 1.8 MeV gamma-ray line emission, measured by COMPTEL. This can be done by comparing the distribution of the 1.8 MeV line emission to that of po- tential 26 AI sources. However, COMPTEL's huge instrumental background introduces systematic and large statistical uncertainties in the data-analysis which makes the determination of the 1.8 MeV emission distribution difficult. Therefore, a major objective of this project is to reduce the systematic uncertainties and to determine the statistical errors of the analysis. Three approaches will then be followed to identify the primary 26AI source: First from Maximum-Entropy imaging with a study of the influence of the uncertainties on the image, second by fitting models of Galactic 26 AI distribution to the data and third by a multiwavelength counterpart search. The results should further set constraints on theoretical nucleosynthesis models.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
