Objective
Random surfaces are membranes whose shape or internal geometry are able to fluctuate. They occur in many different branches of science; examples include microemulsions, biological membranes and phase interfaces. They also play an important role in the study of two-dimensional quantum gravity, in which case the surfaces are of a more mathematical nature. The proposed project is mainly concerned with this last application. The aim is to study such surfaces using a variety of mathematical techniques and possibly computer simulations. In particular, I intend to consider a model in which multiple Ising spins are attached to a random surface, in the form of a planar dynamical phi-cubed graph. This model has attracted considerable interest recently. The primary objective of my work would be to determine the phase diagram for this model, as this would throw some light on various mathematical problems that occur with random surface models.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
