Objective The main objective is to explain the observed hierarchy in the mass spectrum of the quarks and leptons within the framework of supersymmetric unification and in terms of new-abelian or nonabelian-symmetries, starting from a minimal set of assumptions, input parameters and content on heavy particles to generate predictive 'Ansatz' for the structure of the mass matrices. We will focus on the more general case of non-symmetric matrices and explore the connection between the possible hierarchical patterns in the matrices and the appearance of mass-mixing relations in the quark as well as in the lepton sector. These could be tested in upcoming high precision b-physics and neutrino-oscillation experiments and have also implications for the resolution of at least one of the three neutrino puzzles : the solar and atmospheric neutrino deficits and the hot dark matter problem.
