Mesoscopic modelling of transport in complex fluids

Objective

The aim of this project is to generalize the Lattice-Boltzmann scheme t simulate the dynamics of liquid crystals, macromolecular solutions and system with non-uniform composition.
We will consider the coupling o hydrodynamic flow to general tensorial fields that, unlike usual diffusion problems, act back on the flow. We will introduce additional 'hydrodynamical' variables to model the local molecular alignment, construct discretized constitutive relations, and describe different kinds of boundaries.
We will apply these techniques to study complex flow phenomena in anisotropic liquids, anchoring and dynamics of liquid crystals in porous media, flow in non-Newtonian fluids, dynamics of wetting in liquid crystals, and colloidal suspensions in the presence of optical fields.
We will extend a new computer technique, Dissipative Particle Dynamics, to liquid crystals.
Fundamental aspects of these models, as the consistent inclusion of noise, will be addressed.
The project will broaden a collaboration between FOM and Shell Research

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
