Comparative performance of a dioiceous species - pistacia lentiscus - in response to the environmental stress of Serra da Arrabida - Portugal

Objective

The present research project aims to verify whether the dioiceous form Pistacia lentiscus ( a mediterranean scrub species) has some adaptive value to colonize habitats subjected to human disturbance through ploughing, grazing or fire. The study area will be Serra da Arrabida Natural Park (central part of Portugal).
A four months period is applied for this project, the first two months for field work and the last two, for data analysis and preparation of scientific papers.
The field program will focuss ecophysiological and morphological measurements in male and female individuals. The first group will be daily cycle of leaf gas exchange, leaf fluorescence, stomatal resistance, leaf transpiration and xylem water potential together with environmental data. The morphological measurements will compare organ distribution, Leaf Area Index and seasonal elongation of new twigs.
The statistical data analysis, discussion of the results with the portuguese team and preparation of scientific papers will be carry out during the last two months.
