Objective
The project focuses on the investigation of charge and energy transport between layers of different materials using femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. Different heterostructures and mesoscopic systems shall be studied: metallic multilayers, semiconductor and metal - molecular layer interfaces and mesoscopic 2D systems on bulk material surfaces. A special emphasis will be given to the characterization of the elementary processes that determine and condition the transport effects at the interfaces. Electron transport will be investigated in metallic heterostructures using a multiwavelength thermoreflection technique and at a bulk material - molecular layer interface using absorption saturation spectroscopy. A new experimental system combining submicron and subpicosecond resolution will be developed, using femtosecond and near-field optical techniques. This will be applied to the investigation of energy relaxation and transport in ordered and disordered mesoscopic systems on surfaces.
