Objectif
THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO STUDY THE ELECTRONIC SHELL STRUCTURE IN SODIUM CLUSTERS. THE METHOD WE PLAN TO USE IS EVAPORATION IN A HEAT BATH, i.e. EVAPORATION OF CLUSTERS AT A CONSTANT TEMPERATURE, IN A HOT, INERT GAS MEDIUM. THIS METHOD SHOULD PROVE MUCH MORE PRE- CISE IN DETERMINING THE MAGIC NUMBERS AND THE SHELL ENERGY, TWO FUNDAMENTAL QUANTITIES, COMPARED TO THE METHOD USED SO FAR, EVAPO- RATION IN VACUUM.
TO REALIZE THIS EXPERIMENT, WE INTEND TO PROCEED AS FOLLOWS: THE CLUSTERS ARE FORMED IN A GAS AGGREGATION CLUSTER SOURCE, BY QUEN- CHING SODIUM VAPOR IN A COLD, INERT GAS, THEN EVAPORATE IN A HEATED REGION OF THE SOURCE; THERAFTER A CLUSTER BEAM IS FORMED AND THE SIZE DISTRIBUTION IS PROBED USING A TIME-OF-FLIGHT MASS SPECTRO- METER. THE SHELL EFFECT IN THE SIZE DISTRIBUTION WILL ALLOW TO EXTRACT SIMPLY THE MAGIC NUMBERS AND THE SHELL ENERGY.
