Experimental and theoretical studies on grain boundary wetting

Objective

We study the thermodynamics and kinetics of wetting at grain boundaries metallic materials, and its consequences of on structural evolution and mechanical properties.
The thermodynamics is controlled by the position of the wetting temperature with respect to the phase diagram. The kinetics is related to mass transport either by diffusion or by liquid flow. The consequences of the existence of a liquid film at the grain boundaries are both on the structural evolution (abnormal grain growth as well as on the mechanical properties (enhanced grain boundary sliding).
We will study both experimentally and theoretically these different aspects in various metallic systems (Al-Sn, Al-Ga, Al-Pb, Al-Sn-Pb, Mo-Ni).
The experimental approach will consist in optical metallography, SEM, study by X-ray diffractometry of grain boundarie's mobility, TEM, In siu TEM and mechanical testing associated with fracture analysis. The theoretical approach relies both on classical analytical work, and on the use of computer simulations at the mesos- copic scale.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
