New directions in the physics of foams

Objective

The candidate proposes to spend a further year in the Physics Department of Trinity College Dublin, where he currently holds a HCM fellowship which has proved successful up to this point, with several publications and conferenee presentations. During the year he will complete his PhD in physics.
His research will encompass experimental work on single films and Plateau borders using the method of forced drainage developed in the Department. Light scattering techniques can offer insight into local flow properties that are not yet included in the current theory of drainage. In collaboration with others, advanced simulation techniques will be applied to the local fluid dynamics of drainage in foams. A wealth of phenomena related to steady flow and various instabilities remains to be attacked by the combination of simulation and experiment, an approach which has led to a number of discoveries in recent years.
The candidate is in contact with several foam research groups (EU network FOAMPHYS, SHELL Amsterdam) which present possibilities for industrial applications.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
