Geochemical, mineralogical and petrographic studies of the newly drilled natural fission reactor at Bangombe -Gabon

Objective

The subject of this study is the natural fission reactor of Bangombi (Gabon) representing a very high grade uranium ore where fission reactions occurred 2.0 billion years ago. As the reactor is located close to the surface, the surrounding rocks are influenced by contemporary weathering under tropical conditions. Moreover, hydrothermal alteration took place in the period of criticality. To determine the effects of such alteration processes on the behaviour of actinides and fission products and to understand the main geological and mineralogical parameters and mechanisms influencing the retention and/or migration of these elements, it is proposed to examine one drill-hole and a weathered profile. Therefore, detailed mineralogical, geochemical and petrographic analyses such as scanning microscopy, transmitted electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analyses, ICP mass-spectrometry, thermo-ionization mass spectrometry and gas mass spectrometry will be performed .

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
