Objective
Extension and application of the results of the Human Capital and Mobility project on 'Conditionals in legal language', specifically:
I. Enlargement of the contrastive perspective of the analysis to German and French legal texts;
II. Compilation of a Contrastive Glossary of Conditionals in legal language (English, Italian, German, French).
We are currently investigating the semantic properties of 'Complex Conditional Connectives' such as 'nel caso in cui', 'a condizione che', 'in the event that (of)' and 'provided that'.
Broadening the contrastive perspective of the analysis to German and French legal texts will clarify this area of phenomena, owing to the close parallels between English and German as well as between Italian and French. A useful Glossary of these connectives in the four languages will be produced.
Our study of the semantic value of these connectives, which have never been systematically investigated, will permit clearer comprehension of legal writings, more accurate translations across the four languages and establishment of a general approach to such problems in other languages: a contribution to harmonisation of the system of legal translation across the EU.
