Objective The objective of the proposed research is to develop mechanisms to effectively control the flow of materials in multi-stage manufacturing systems. Material flow control is an optimization problem that addresses the question of when and how much to produce in order to achieve a satisfactory customer service level while keeping low material inventories, in the face of uncertainty in machine capacity and in demand. The proposed research will seek to develop and analyze simple but effective control policies that depend on a small number of parameters per stage and decide when to release material into a stage. The research grant applicant is expected to contribute significantly in the development of research in Production Management in the Host Institution, which is currently in its set up phase.
