Relationship between structure and electronic properties in the operation of polymeric semiconductor devices

Objetivo

The project involves characterisation of organic semiconductor materials, primarily conjugated polymers, to understand more of the underlying semiconductor physics of these materials. Many issues regarding the electronic behaviour of these materials (anisotropy, neutral and charged excitations etc.) are still far from understood and cause a great deal of controversy. It is also possible to control the morphology of the polymers (by controlled phase separation in polymer mixtures and in diblock copolymers). The major tools in the project are planned to be high resolution Raman and luminescence spectroscopy. Raman scattering can give information about conjugation length in conjugated polymers, and by using a microscope attachment, measurements of thin films allows determination of orientation and ordering. The same spectrometer can also be connected to a scanning near-field microscope (SNOM), which will be used to increase the resolution and to decrease the effects of inhomogeneous line broadening in luminescence and Raman scattering.
