Condition monitoring and ultrasonic sensing utilising extrinsic fibre-optic interferometric techniques

Objective

Summary-Development of an instrument for detection of broad-band (0.1-1 MHz) low amplitude (0.1 nm) surface displacements using an extrinsic fibre-optic Sagnac interferometer. The instrument is expected to have considerable better performance in terms of spatial resolution and responsivity compared to conventional transducers, and is non-contacting with a uniform velocity responsivity. The instrument is ideal for detecting Acoustic Emission, and find numerous applications in condition monitoring. Various noise sources associated with the instrument will be analysed, and methods for obtaining ultimate performance will be investigated. Theoretical and experimental studies of new wavelength division multiplexing schemes for addressing several intstruments will be performed, and analysis of alternative extrinsic Sagnac inteferometer configurations for distributed sensing applications will be conducted. Novel variants of the instrument for detection of torsional and in-plane surface displacements will be examined both theoretically and experimentally, and a better understanding of high frequency surface vibrations are expected to be obtained.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
