Optical and structural processes induced in amorphous materials by ultra- short laser pulses

Objective

The research project aims to perform a systematic study on ultrashort laser pulse induced structural relaxation/de-relaxation and
crystallization/amorphization phenomena in amorphous thin film materials. The research will be centered in elemental and complex systems in which those transformations are accompanied by changes in the optical properties in order to exploit the potential use of ultrashort laser pulses for optical information storage applications. The transformations will be induced by ns and ps laser pulse irradiation at visible and ultraviolet wavelengths and the resulting structures will be analyzed by means of different optical and structural characterization techniques including Raman spectroscopy and electron diffraction. The process kinetics will be analyzed by means of real time reflectivity measurements with ns resolution and ps time-resolved optical measurements. The study of the transformations will include the determination of the conditions upon which these processes can be reversibly induced and of the critical factors for reversibility. The results of the project will improve our comprehension of the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with thin film materials in aspects like the influence of electronic excitation in the induced transforsmations or the kinetics of solidification under extremely severe undercooling conditions.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
