Dental composites incorporating hydroxyapatite filler and x-ray opaque base resins

Objectif

The improvement on the mechanical properties of polymers when a filler is present has been known in the industrial world since the beginning of the century and variety of inorganic substances have been investigated as potential fillers.
The aim of this project is to carry out in-depth research into the use of Hydroxyapatite (HA) as a filler for dental composites.
The main objectives are as follows:
1.- Obtaining and characterization of HA powders with a range of particle size distributions, surface area and porosities.
2.- Surface treatment of HA filler with a silane coupling agent. The bonding between filler and silane coupling agent will be studied in order to obtain more information as to whether mechanical strength is primarily due to physical or chemical bonding of the silane to the filler. 3.- Development of HA based composite resins using novel X-ray opaque dimethacrylate monomers to enhance the X-ray opacity.
Evaluation of the physical and mechanical properties of HA based composite resins.
