Social organization of colonies in the ant proformica longiseta - a study based on microsatellite markers

Objectif

The program is based on the study of the kinship relations that exist among members of a polygyny society, using microsatellites markers. These markers are a powerful molecular tool because of its degree of variability. Due to that the first objective is the isolation and characterization of the microsatellites in the species Proformica longiseta. This study would be carried out in the host institution, Department of Genetics, University of Uppsala. There we would learn the techniques and method necessary for it. The obtaining of samples would occur in Sierra Nevada (Granada-Spain). There we would take up polygyny nests and the ones that have been make up by budding from the former. We expect to know: genetic relatedness among coexisting queens and among workers, percentage of offspring of each queen Occurrence of haploid males. Percentage of males produced by female and by workers. The composition of the founddress group.
