New molecular systems exhibiting electrical and nonlinear optical or magnetic properties

Objective

The feasibility of this project, which aims at the preparation and study of new molecules exhibiting an interplay of conductivity, nonlinear optics and magnetism, was demonstrated by the preparation of the first molecular magnetic superconductor (Kurmoo, JACS, 1995, 117, 12029), by the first observation of a field restored highly conducting state in a molecular system (Goze, Europhys. Lett., 1994, 28, 427) and by the preparation of new MPS3 intercalates exhibiting such properties (Lacroix, Science, 1994, 263, 658).
Research will be developed along three lines: (i) coupling of metal complexes of the 1,2-dithiolate ligands such as dmit with cations exhibiting NLO properties such as DAMS, (ii) coupling of these complexes with magnetic cations such as metalloceniums, (iii) coupling TTF-derived donor molecules with magnetic metal complex anions.
The methods include chemical synthesis and characterization, crystal growth, electrochemical and X-ray diffraction studies, and studies of their transport, magnetic, and NLO properties.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact):
The applicant will become acquainted with a new chemistry and a new physics within a research effort in the emerging field of molecular electronics. Development of the collaboration between the host and of-origin laboratories is expected.
Links with industry / industrial relevance:
Industrial relevance of this project relates to molecular electronics. The present project is linked with the COST project D4/001/95.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
